An Approach to Developing Intelligent Tutors in Mathematics
نویسنده
چکیده
Mathematics is highly structured and underpins most of science and engineering. For this reason it has proved a very suitable test domain for intelligent tutoring system (ITS) research with the result that probably more tutoring systems have been structured for the domain than for any othw. However, there still exists no consensus on any approach for the design of such systems. Consequently, existing ITSs in the domain suffer from a considerable number of shortcomings which render them ‘unintelligent’. This paper after rigorously examining the shortcomings of existing approaches, presents an alternative approach to constructing ITSs in mathematics which has been demonstrated to have improved on at least some of the shortcomings of existing approaches. It also provides a flavour of how this approach has been implemented in the FITS system.

Opening the Door to Non-programmers: Authoring Intelligent Tutor Behavior by Demonstration
Intelligent tutoring systems are quite difficult and time intensive to develop. In this paper, we describe a method and set of software tools that ease the process of cognitive task analysis and tutor development by allowing the author to demonstrate, instead of programming, the behavior of an intelligent tutor. We focus on the subset of our tools that allow authors to create “Pseudo Tutors” th...
متن کاملImplicit Strategies for Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Nowadays several researches in Intelligent Tutoring Systems are oriented toward developing emotionally sensitive tutors. These tutors use different instructional strategies addressing both learners’ cognitive and affective dimensions and rely, for most of them, on explicit strategies and direct interventions. In this paper we propose a new approach to augment these tutors with new implicit stra...
متن کاملHow well does Sparse Blended Learning work? A Case Study from a Developing Country
Blended learning in a classroom setting serves multiple purposes of helping students and teachers learn from experts in a field. However, it is challenging to design sustainable implementations of such paradigms in developing countries. For example, most schools in developing countries do not have the technology infrastructure required to implement such approaches. This paper presents a unique ...

Towards our goal of developing computer tutors that can collaborate with students on tasks in simulated environments, we have built a series of four prototype tutors. These tutors integrate two independent but related strands of research: intelligent tutoring systems and task-oriented dialogue systems. While the tutors share a core approach to teaching procedural tasks, each was designed to exp...
متن کاملStudying Human Tutors to Facilitate Self-explanation
This paper reports the first phase of a project with the goal of developing a general model of self-explanation support, which could be used in both openand closed-ended domains. We studied how human tutors provide additional support to students learning with an existing intelligent tutoring system designed to help students learn database modelling. We report on the findings from this study, wh...
